At BODYTEC, we know you’re all about optimising your performance, making every minute count, and feeling your absolute best, inside and out. For many of us, that journey starts with the ritual of a warm cup of coffee. Whether it’s your pre-BODYTEC boost or a post-workout comfort, coffee culture is deeply woven into our daily lives.

But beyond that familiar caffeine buzz, there’s a whole lot more brewing in your cup that impacts your energy, your recovery, and your overall well-being. And since we’re all about smart choices, we’ve partnered with the experts at Nutritional Solutions to help you decode your daily brew.

The Buzz Behind the Bean: Fueling Your Day (and Your Workout)
Caffeine is the obvious player here – it stimulates your central nervous system, sharpening your focus and alertness. Crucial for that intense 20-minute EMS session or just tackling a busy day! The caffeine content can vary significantly:

  • Filter coffee (250 ml): ~170 mg caffeine
  • Cappuccino (250 ml): ~75 mg caffeine
  • Espresso (30 ml): 40–90 mg caffeine

The general recommendation, especially for those actively training, is to stay under 300 mg of caffeine per day (around 1–2 filter coffees or up to 4 cappuccinos). If you’re pregnant, it’s best to limit caffeine to under 200 mg/day or avoid it.

Is Coffee in Your DNA? Personalising Your Fuel

Just like your BODYTEC session is tailored to your body, your genes can impact how you react to caffeine!

  • The CYP1A2 gene influences how fast you metabolise caffeine. If you have the AA version, you’re a fast metaboliser. But if you carry the AC or CC combo, you’re a slower metaboliser, meaning more than two cups a day could potentially increase your risk of heart problems.
  • The COMT gene also plays a role. If you have the AG or AA versions, your enzyme activity is slower, which might leave you feeling more jittery or anxious with too much caffeine. So, that post-coffee anxiety might be in your genes!

Coffee vs. Iron: Optimise Your Absorption

Here’s a fact many active individuals might miss: Coffee can reduce the absorption of iron from your meals. This is important for maintaining optimal energy levels and avoiding iron deficiency, especially if you’re prone to low iron or focused on recovery. Avoid taking your iron supplement with your morning coffee; pair it with water or a Vitamin C-rich juice instead!

On the flip side, if you have haemochromatosis (a condition of too much iron), coffee may help reduce iron absorption.

Coffee and Your Body: Beyond the Buzz

Your daily coffee habit impacts more than just your energy. Consider these points when assessing your overall well-being and how it affects your readiness for training:

Mood and Sleep: Too much coffee can lead to sleep disturbances, irritability, and increased anxiety. If you’re already managing stress or poor sleep, cutting back to 1–2 cups a day could make a significant difference to your mental clarity and recovery.
Gut Instinct: If your morning coffee sends you straight to the bathroom, that’s normal! Coffee stimulates peristalsis (gut movement). While helpful for regularity, it can irritate those with IBS. If you experience bloating or cramps, try cutting back.
Bone Health: High caffeine intake has been linked to lower bone mineral density, but moderate consumption (under 400 mg per day) is generally considered safe, especially with adequate calcium intake, crucial for strong bones supporting your powerful EMS contractions!
Acid Reflux: For some, coffee worsens acid reflux or heartburn, as caffeine may weaken the muscle that keeps stomach acid in place. If reflux is an issue, experiment with reducing your intake.

Beware of the Add-Ins: Hidden Energy Bombs

Your healthy coffee can quickly become a sugar bomb or a significant calorie contributor with common add-ins. At BODYTEC, we’re all about efficiency, and that applies to your nutrition, too!

Sugar: Two teaspoons per cup can add up fast.
Milk: Milky coffees like lattes and cappuccinos can significantly increase your energy intake. Two cappuccinos, for example, can contain the same energy as 4 slices of bread!

Try reducing sugar gradually (from 2 tsp to 1, then half, then none). Opt for smaller, less milky coffees to better manage your energy intake and ensure your coffee is fueling you efficiently, not adding hidden extras.

Take-Home Tips from BODYTEC and Nutritional Solutions:

Know your caffeine limit: Understand how your genes might influence your tolerance.
Space your coffee away from iron-rich meals or supplements to optimise absorption. Keep an eye on hidden add-ins like sugar and excessive milk that add unwanted calories.
Listen to your body: Monitor your gut health and mental state for signs that coffee may be affecting you negatively.
Enjoy coffee in moderation: Make it work for your body and your training goals.
