BODYTEC: How does a trail running shoe differ from a regular running shoe?
RYAN SANDES: Trail running shoes generally offer a bit more support and have a more aggressive grip. The midsole is normally a little more stiff, and the upper is made out of a more hardwearing material.
Why’s it important to have the right shoe?
It’s important to have the correct shoes to prevent injury and also make your running experience more fun and pleasurable. If you are in the wrong shoes and get blisters and have sore feet it is not fun. Running in the right shoes will give you more confidence on the trails and enable you to run faster too.
How many pairs of trail running shoes do you own?
Hehe! I am a brat and have lost count. I do a lot of research and development for my sponsors, Salomon, so I have loads of prototype shoes at home that I am testing.
How long do you keep them for before you replace them?
Its depends on the wear of the shoe. Some last 300km and others over 1,800km.
What should you look for in a running shoe?
When looking for a trail shoe I would look at the fit of the shoe as I like a bit more room for my forefoot, but it must be a snug fit around my midfoot and heel. I would look at the support the shoe offers and the midsole flexibility/stiffness. The shoe also needs to be lightweight and a comfortable fit. The durability of the shoe is also important as well as the breathability, depending on what conditions I will be running in.
Socks?
I think socks are really important as they make a shoe that much more comfortable and can prevent any blisters and chaffing. If you have the wrong socks on it can be very uncomfortable and ruin your run. I like fairly thin-fitting socks that are very breathable and soft against my skin.
