How to avoid overindulgence during the holidays

The holidays are filled with joy, laughter and happy moods but sometimes amid festivities, we can do things that we regret later. Some of which could be overeating, overspending, drinking too much alcohol, not getting enough sleep, and not making time for any physical activity. It happens to the best of us. We follow great routines throughout the year and then completely overindulge when we’re in holiday mode. Can you relate?

Here are some tips to help you enjoy the holidays without going overboard:

Don’t leave eating well for tomorrow

Cheat day is a pretty popular term in the fitness world. We are sure that you’ve had days when you’ve fully indulged in snacks that don’t contain any nutrients at all. Don’t deny yourself snacks but do so in moderation since you’re more likely to overindulge in one full day of cheat-eating than one week of occasional snacking.

Check the menus before you dine

Most restaurants share their menus online, which gives you ample time to choose healthier options or opt to relocate to a venue that has a more suitable menu.

Save time by preparing meals and snacks in bulk in advance

Often, the food that we prepare for ourselves is the healthiest option but it can be quite time-consuming. Choose to prepare easy healthy meals in advance and refrigerate or freeze them rather than ordering in.

Drink lots of water

A great way to avoid a hangover and feeling tipsy is to drink lots of water, before, during, and after you consume alcohol. Add ingredients like fresh mint, lemon or berries for extra flavour if you find plain water too boring.

Be intentional when you shop

If you’re the kind of shopper who heads to the store for one product and returns with 10, compelling festive season marketing and sales could be tricky to resist, leading to overspending. Prepare a list of items needed before arriving at the store and stick to it, or dedicate a daily shopping allowance. Reaching your daily allowance limit will give you time to decide whether you should still buy any other items that you were interested in. Also, don’t go food shopping on an empty stomach. You’re more likely to overindulge in additional and unhealthy items when hungry while grocery shopping.

Keep your sun essentials with you at all times

Summer holidays tend to coincide with more time in the sun which can lead to sunburn, dehydration, and in severe cases, sunstroke. Avoid all of these by making sure you always apply sunscreen before leaving home, keep extra sunscreen and a hat or umbrella at hand.
