Who doesn’t like to nibble on a little something while the food is on the Braai. Don’t give in to cheat-snacks at events while the main course is being prepared.
Here are 7 healthy snacks to serve on Braai day:
Spicy Chickpeas
Here’s a snack that you probably haven’t DIYed. Roast chickpeas in the oven until crispy and season with some salt and paprika.
Mushrooms
Oh, the things you could do with some juicy mushrooms. Whether crumbed and baked, dipped in cheese and bacon or popped on a skewer, this is a really tasty snack to serve on Braai day.
Wholegrain Breads
Drop the buttery garlic rolls and Roosterkoek for wholegrain breads that are just as delicious.
Cheeseboard
Traditionally Braais are complemented with bar snacks and beer but who says that you can’t switch it up with a glass of wine and a cheeseboard. Build a healthy cheeseboard by adding fruit and modest sizes of artisan cheese – which you could also pre-portion so that guests don’t overdo it.
Pretzels
Go for oven-baked pretzels rather than chips and dip. Even though pretzels aren’t really nutritious, they have much less fat content than chips.
Raw Walnuts and Almonds
Opt for high-energy, high-protein nuts like raw walnuts and almonds, rather than roasted peanuts.
Sweet Potato strips
Drizzle some oven-baked sweet potato strips with some flaxseed or avocado oil and season with salt.
