Healthy Braai Options This Heritage Day

Heritage Day takes place in South Africa on 24 September, and is also affectionately known as Braai Day.

Whilst the typical South Africa braai is almost everyone’s favourite meal and is incredibly easy to put together, it can get over-indulgent, with thick mayonnaise potato salads, rich saucy meats and many sugary and alcoholic drinks being enjoyed.

Adding in a few healthier options can be just as delicious, and don’t have to take away from the traditional family-and-friends meal we all love.

1) Lemon Pesto Vegetable Skewers

Lemon pesto vegetable skewers are incredibly easy to make, and are so flavourful and aromatic. You can slide on any vegetables you like, marinate them in pesto, lemon juice and olive oil and pop them on the braai.

2) Stuffed Mushrooms

Easy and simple to make, stuffed mushrooms can be adapted to how you like them. Simply take big brown mushrooms and stuff them with anything you fancy, like pesto, feta or chick peas, and then grill them on the braai.

3) Corn on the Cob

Corn is incredibly delicious at a braai and simply require a foil covering and to be placed in the braai. Leave them in for a while and serve as is.

4) Steak Alternative

If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, braaing a steak is not an option for you, but you can still enjoy a delicious grilled meal. Simply sprinkle olive oil and herbs over aubergine, butternut or an avo and place on the grill and then top with feta. You’ll thank us later.

5) Cucumber, Black Bean, Corn, Tomato and Avo Salad

This salad is both delicious and refreshing for a braai. It includes basic ingredients, and the tang of the lime juice as a dressing, offers a healthier alternative to rich mayonnaise. Simply mix cucumber, black beans, corn, a red pepper, cherry tomatoes, coriander and avocado together according to the number of guests, and squeeze the juice of one lime over, and serve.
