Is frozen food healthier than fresh food?

Frozen over fresh

Have you ever wondered if frozen food is as good as fresh? You might be surprised that frozen food can be healthier than you think and taste better.

Are frozen veggies and fruits still nutrient-dense?

The nutritional value of vegetables cannot be reduced during the freezing process. Because most frozen fruits and vegetables are frozen soon after they are picked, they are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and freezing locks in many nutrients.

The benefits of frozen vegetables and fruits:

  • Reasonably priced
  • Nutritious
  • Don’t need to be washed
  • They’re pre-cut
  • They are ready for cooking and serving

Fresh food is frequently picked before it reaches its optimal maturity. This is because it must travel from the farm to your supermarket, from truck to shelves, and still appear fresh enough for you to purchase.

On the other hand, frozen vegetables and fruits are harvested from the farm at their peak and packed flash-frozen.  Many experts believe frozen food contains the same amount or even more vitamins and minerals as fresh produce.

Are there preservatives in frozen vegetables?

When fruits and vegetables are frozen, they do not require any preservatives or other substances, making freezing a healthy approach to extend the life of fresh food. However, check the labels of commercially frozen food to verify there is no added sugar, salt, or flavours.

That being said, frozen foods can be just as nutritious as fresh, and they’re easier to find in a pinch. You can store a variety of frozen fruits and vegetables in your freezer and eat them in various ways. Frozen fruit can also be blended into smoothies or used to top porridge or whole-grain toast with butternut.
