Can you train with your make-up on? | BODYTEC

Dr Maureen Allem, founder and medical director of Skin Renewal, gives the following advice:

BODYTEC: What are the benefits of exercise on your skin?

Exercise stimulates blood flow and circulation, which means that the nutrients and oxygen that is carried through the blood, reaches the skin, keeping it healthy. Stress can cause havoc on the skin, however moderate exercise is known to decrease stress levels, which definitely has an impact on the skin. Because of the stimulation of blood flow and the circulation, there is definitely a positive impact on the skin, making it look younger. Exercise also improves our sleep patterns – when the body doesn’t get enough sleep, it has a negative impact on the skin.

How important is protecting your skin when training outside?

Sun damage is the biggest ageing contributor that most people face. It damages the collagen in the skin, which in turn causes the skin to appear dehydrated and tired. It is important to pick a good sunscreen. While there is no such thing as a total sunblock, look for a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection (broad spectrum), a high SPF, long-lasting protection and ingredients that pose fewer health concerns when absorbed by the body

Can you train with make-up on?

It is definitely better to train with a clean face. During exercise, you perspire and if mixed with make-up, it creates the perfect environment for acne. Pores become congested, preventing your skin to release the sweat effectively. This could result in skin irritations and breakouts.
If you can’t resist exercising with make-up, ensure that the skin is cleaned and exfoliated straight after the session.

How does sweat affect your skin?

Sweating is a natural body function, during which time impurities are removed from the body.
Sweat that is allowed to dry on the skin, however, is not a good thing, as sweat also consists of the grime that was eliminated from the body. The solution is simple – cleanse your face as soon after exercise as you possibly can.
