4 Powerful Health Benefits of Reading

A man reading a book

Many people underestimate the impact that a good book can have on one’s overall well-being. Some steer away from reading due to time constraints, but if you don’t already read for pleasure, here are 4 reasons to start:

1. A higher level of concentration

Studies show that people who read more, display higher levels of concentration. The longer you focus on one task, the better you’ll be able to concentrate over time. This will aid you in maintaining health goals as well.

2. Better sleep

Not only does a lack of sleep reduce your training performance, but it slows down your recovery process. Scientists believe that the act of reading within the last hour before bed can help your body wind down since it’s a calming activity. With more sleep, you’ll not only feel better but perform better in every aspect of your life.

3. Improved self-esteem

A survey conducted by the University of Liverpool showed that people who read more display high levels of self-esteem and are more equipped to navigate social and cultural challenges. Ironically, in order to tackle concerns such as weight gain, one must first feel confident enough to get started, which is where self-esteem comes in.

4. Less stress

Stress contributes to inflammation, slows bodily functions, and can negatively affect your mood. On the days that you’re unable to relieve stress with exercise, picking up a good book can be just as satisfying to help you unwind.
